Premiership Preview: Exciting Showdowns Ahead Before International Break
The Scottish Premiership is set to kick off another thrilling weekend, with just one round of games remaining before the international break comes into play.
Six matches, five different kick-off times, and plenty of storylines to explore.
Last weekend was particularly fruitful for Rangers, who not only secured a late victory over Aberdeen in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals thanks to a goal from Ryan Naderi, but also watched as their rivals Celtic stumbled against Falkirk.
This opened the door for Rangers to potentially close the gap at the top of the table to just one point, assuming they can overcome Derek McInnes’ St Mirren side, which is currently enjoying an unbeaten streak of 11 matches.
Rangers should be cautious, though. Their previous outing in the Saturday evening slot resulted in a disappointing draw against Dundee. St Mirren has shown resilience at home, having recently held Hibernian to a draw and secured a win against a strong Dundee side.
Despite struggling with just one win in their last eight matches, Craig McLeish’s team put up a strong fight the last time they faced Rangers, with only a late goal from Bojan Miovski separating the two teams.
St Mirren is sitting in eighth place, right in the mix for a top-six finish. They even led Celtic in a match earlier this season before ultimately losing 2-1, proving they can compete with the league's elite.
Meanwhile, Hibernian managed to find some joy last weekend, defeating Edinburgh rivals Heart of Midlothian 2-1 to snap a seven-game winless streak. Marink Reedijk's squad is now focused on getting their league form back on track before they face Rangers again in mid-December.
Currently, Hibs are at the bottom of the table, having secured just one point from their last four league games. They will look to improve their fortunes against Aberdeen on Saturday evening, a team also in desperate need of a turnaround after suffering two consecutive league defeats.
Both clubs are still in the early stages of the season, so it might be premature to label their situations as crises. However, with both teams aiming for a top-six finish, they need to find consistency soon.
In other news, Celtic's recent form has been a mixed bag. After bouncing back from their defeat to Falkirk with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Besiktas in the Europa League, they now face Kilmarnock on Sunday.
Injuries have plagued Hearts, who suffered a 3-1 loss against Thun last week and are now eyeing a much-needed revival. They will be hosting Falkirk, who are on the hunt for their fifth consecutive victory, marking a remarkable turnaround for the Bairns.
As the weekend unfolds, Dundee United will host Motherwell, while a Tayside derby featuring St Johnstone and Dundee promises plenty of action as well. With the league table tightly packed, every point is crucial.
With these critical matches lined up, players and fans alike are gearing up for an exciting weekend in the Premiership before the international break takes center stage.
