Tuchel Explains Palmer Omission as England Squad Takes Shape

Tuchel Explains Palmer Omission as England Squad Takes Shape
Thomas Tuchel has made some bold choices for his England squad, leaving Chelsea's Cole Palmer on the sidelines. The England manager stated that Palmer is missing too many chances to make a strong impression, a clear signal that competition is fierce for a spot in the national team. Palmer, 24, was also absent from the previous squad during the autumn fixtures and will miss out again as England faces Croatia at Wembley on November 12 and Spain in Madrid on November 15. Instead of Palmer, Tuchel has called up Fulham's Josh King and Borussia Dortmund's Jobe Bellingham, both of whom are looking to make their senior debuts. "We have enough number 10s, and we are sticking with the squad from the last camp because we were pleased with our time together," Tuchel explained. He emphasized that King, who can play across the attack, offers added versatility to the lineup. The England manager acknowledged the desire of every player to represent their country, including Palmer. However, he reiterated that performance in training camps is what truly matters. "He misses too many opportunities to impress," Tuchel added, making it clear that potential alone isn't enough. Jobe Bellingham, at 21, will join his brother Jude in the squad, which is a significant milestone. The two could become the first siblings to line up together for England since the Neville brothers. Jobe's rise has been notable; he transitioned from Sunderland to Dortmund in a deal worth up to £31 million after helping his former club secure promotion. Tuchel praised Bellingham's impressive form, noting that he has been a standout player for Dortmund this season. "He is a regular starter and has become influential on the pitch," the manager remarked. Bellingham's selection comes at the expense of Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo, who has struggled to find his footing lately. King, who has made a strong start to the Premier League season with two goals and an assist, has a solid youth international record. Tuchel described him as a "fantastic character" and an important addition to the squad, providing flexibility in training. In terms of injuries, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka will miss the November fixtures due to a quadriceps injury sustained in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. Reports suggest he could be out for around six weeks. Additionally, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, who impressed during his debut, is sidelined after an injury against Croatia. Other absentees include Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Newcastle's Tino Livramento, both dealing with respective injuries. Despite these challenges, Tuchel has retained several players from the last squad, including James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White, while Ben White and Djed Spence are back after missing out earlier this season. With England sitting second in their Nations League group, just one more point from their remaining two matches will secure a spot in the quarter-finals. The stakes are high, and the competition is fierce as Tuchel prepares for these crucial encounters.
