Can Anyone Stop Gotham from Claiming the Double?
The NWSL playoffs are just around the corner, and it's time to dive into who might disrupt Gotham's quest for glory. Our panel weighs in on the standout players, the underdogs, and the overall landscape as teams gear up for the championship showdown in Washington, D.C.
This summer has been packed with exciting narratives that kept fans engaged, even with the absence of major tournaments like the Olympics or World Cup. Typically, these off years can lead to a bit of a lull for the NWSL, but this season saw thrilling battles for the Shield, a captivating Golden Boot race, and the return of big-name stars. And while some teams like Chicago struggled, others made promising strides forward. Let’s hope Louisville follows suit.
The league is also navigating its relationship with its fanbase amidst some recent controversies. In Portland, tensions surfaced as transphobic groups attempted to infiltrate the league’s discussions, reminiscent of issues faced by the WNBA. Despite these challenges, the NWSL has introduced innovative measures to enhance its appeal, such as the expedited implementation of the “Rodman Rule” to keep its marquee players stateside. Although a proposal to change the league's schedule was met with resistance, these efforts signal a readiness to evolve if it benefits the league.
The competition has been fierce on both ends of the spectrum. Ashley Sanchez has emerged as a frontrunner for the Golden Boot, but she faced serious competition from talents like Barbra Banda and Trinity Rodman. Meanwhile, the race for the Shield has kept fans on the edge of their seats, with three teams vying for the title as the regular season winds down. However, not every team matched that intensity—Chicago and Louisville faced dismal seasons, and Bay FC struggled as well. As the league expands with new franchises on the horizon, there are concerns that talent dilution could become an issue, especially as elite players migrate to leagues abroad.
One team that had the potential to make an impact was the expansion side, Denver Summit. It’s a shame we won’t see their playoff performance, as they tied for third in the league for goals scored. However, inconsistency plagued their season, and they struggled to convert draws into victories. Defensive lapses after the summer break didn’t help, leaving them with a lot to ponder for next season.
The North Carolina Courage spent a good portion of the season in playoff contention but faltered down the stretch. After Sanchez's scoring dipped, they lacked a cohesive attacking strategy to compensate for their defensive weaknesses. Coach Mak Lind will be looking for solutions in the offseason, especially in light of key player Manaka Matsukubo's departure to Chelsea mid-season.
On the flip side, no team is riding a hotter streak than Angel City. After a rocky start, they have surged with eight wins, two draws, and no losses since late August. With nine goals in their last three outings and the addition of Maddie DiMaria, fresh off a stellar U-17 World Cup, they pose a significant threat to any opponent.
Surprisingly, Gotham is not in the playoff mix this year after trading Alyssa Thompson to Chelsea. However, they have shown resilience, maintaining the highest points-per-game rate since late August. With a balanced roster featuring talents like Sveindís Jónsdóttir and Gisele Thompson, they’ll be a team to watch if they can keep their squad healthy.
Angel City’s narrative has shifted dramatically this season. After a promising start, they stumbled but managed to find their footing after a mid-season coaching change. Interim manager Leif Smerud has reinvigorated the squad, emphasizing fundamental play, and players like Ally Sentnor have flourished under the new regime. This scrappy team is peaking at just the right time.
Picking against Gotham in the playoffs feels risky, given their established system that allows for seamless player transitions. The major question is whether they can field a fully fit squad when it matters most. The health of their players will be crucial as they aim for another title.
