O'Neill Committed to Celtic After Brief Doubt
Martin O'Neill is gearing up for Celtic's clash at Fir Park this Sunday. Despite a recent three-match losing streak, O'Neill insists he was never seriously considering stepping down. The 74-year-old, who recently signed a one-year extension, is brimming with enthusiasm after steering the team to a league and Scottish Cup double last season. Following disappointing losses to Rangers and a setback against Ferencvaros in the Europa League, O'Neill contemplated if it was time to move on. Yet, he quickly concluded that continuing as manager was the right choice, stating, "the decision didn't take that long" as he readies his squad for the upcoming Premiership match against Motherwell. "I was obviously upset with our recent results," he noted. "But as long as the club wants me, I'm here to stay." It's been three weeks since Celtic's first league defeat this season, a narrow 1-0 loss at home to their fierce rivals. O'Neill reflected, "Leaving now would have felt wrong. Maybe the international break allowed me some time to think things over, and I realized I wanted to stay. Without that break, I might not have even considered my position." In discussing the future, O'Neill expressed a renewed determination, emphasizing how last season's triumphs motivate him. "You want to be part of this journey, especially with so many games coming up in a short span before the next international break." He acknowledged that while the team may face challenges in European competitions, his focus remains on securing league victories. "I have faith in my team, and our primary goal is to win the league." O'Neill, who clinched seven trophies during his first tenure at Celtic from 2000 to 2005, maintains his passion for football despite its inherent stresses. "My enthusiasm for the game has never waned. Even when management gets tough, I still find joy in the sport. I worry about matches, but that's part of being in this role."
