Ireland's Stars Set for Showdown in Cork Against Kazakhstan

Ireland's Stars Set for Showdown in Cork Against Kazakhstan
Republic of Ireland's head coach Carla Ward has confirmed that both Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan will be back in action for the second leg of their Women's World Cup play-off against Kazakhstan. The Irish team already holds a commanding 8-0 lead from the first leg, but Ward is eager for her star players to contribute. McCabe missed the impressive victory in Astana due to suspension, while O'Sullivan stayed behind, resting after concerns about playing on an artificial pitch. Now that they are both available, Ward is excited to reintegrate them into the lineup as they look to extend their winning streak at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. "Katie and Denise will definitely play, that's for sure," Ward affirmed. "We want to step up our game even further. They are two of Ireland's finest players, and if they are fit, they belong on the pitch." The Irish squad has shown remarkable depth, even without key players like O'Sullivan and McCabe in the first leg. Youngster Jamie Finn, who was called up for the game, scored her debut international goal, contributing to a dominant performance that showcased the team's resilience. The absence of these influential players didn’t hinder the Irish, as Kyra Carusa, Chloe Mustaki, and others found the net, while Kazakhstan faced a tough challenge after captain Yulia Myasnikova was sent off in the first half. Ward was thrilled with how her squad stepped up, emphasizing the healthy competition for spots within the team as they prepare for a tougher test in the play-off final. "It's fantastic to see strong competition throughout the squad now," noted Ward. "Jamie came in and really impressed us. This tight-knit group is pushing each other to improve, and that only bodes well for our future. We’re not just a team with good culture; we’re becoming a top-notch football team." Cork native O'Sullivan, who missed the earlier match against the Netherlands at Pairc Ui Chaoimh due to suspension, is excited about returning home. "I love playing here, especially with my family and friends in the stands. The support from Cork has been incredible throughout my career," she expressed, looking forward to her 133rd cap, just one shy of Emma Byrne's record. Though she was disappointed to sit out the long trip to Kazakhstan, O'Sullivan understands the need for careful management given her knee issues. "I want to wear the Ireland shirt every chance I get, but I appreciate Carla and the staff for protecting me from myself," she explained. "They made the right call. The team went out there and put in a professional performance, and that's what matters most. When the team wins, I'm happy."
