EFL Trophy Drama: Young Guns Shine as Newcastle and Palace Advance
Newcastle United and Crystal Palace's under-21 squads have booked their places in the knockout rounds of the Jersey Mike's Trophy after securing tight wins against League Two opposition. Kyran Thompson was the hero for Newcastle, netting the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Rotherham United in Northern Group C. This win not only knocked the Millers out of the competition but also ensured that the Magpies will advance alongside group leaders Bradford City. On the southern front, Crystal Palace triumphed 2-1 over Newport County thanks to a late winner from David Angibeaud. The Premier League side is now guaranteed to progress, joining Plymouth Argyle in the next stage. However, it was a tough night for Brighton & Hove Albion's under-21 squad, who suffered a staggering 6-0 defeat against Cambridge United in Southern Group G. The Seagulls had an especially rough start when over-age player Ben Barclay saw red for a deliberate handball early in the match. Isaac Heath converted the resulting penalty, and Cambridge didn’t look back, capitalizing on their one-man advantage by adding five more goals in just thirty minutes. Callum Stead was particularly impressive, scoring twice as the U's clinched the top spot in the group, effectively ending Brighton's hopes of advancement. In another match on Tuesday, Doncaster Rovers dominated with a 4-1 win over Rochdale in Northern Group H, eliminating both their opponents and Liverpool U21, who can no longer finish higher than third in their group.
