Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey Faces Extended Layoff After Hamstring Setback
Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, likely missing around two months of action in the Women's Super League due to a hamstring injury.
The Spain international picked up the injury during Arsenal's 4-2 defeat against Manchester City on October 4, a match that proved to be a turning point for her season.
Since joining Arsenal from Barcelona two years ago, Caldentey has established herself as a vital asset, even earning the title of WSL Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season.
"Mariona went off against Manchester City and didn’t travel with Spain. It's a hamstring injury, so she will be out for a while," Arsenal manager Renee Slegers confirmed.
The prognosis is concerning, with Slegers estimating that the midfielder could be out for anywhere between eight to ten weeks. "We’re re-scanning, and the healing process looks positive. Of course, we’re hoping for a quicker return, but it’s a significant injury," she added.
Caldentey's absence is a major setback for Arsenal, who are looking to bounce back in the WSL when they face Birmingham City this Saturday at 12:45 BST.
The Gunners are struggling at the moment, having managed just one victory in their first five league matches, which has led to increased scrutiny on Slegers' future.
Adding to the team's woes, they will also be without England forward Chloe Kelly and German newcomer Selina Cerci for the upcoming match.
"Selina had knee surgery after her condition worsened. We had to step in, unfortunately," Slegers explained.
"She's been training for most sessions, but managing an injury can definitely impact a player's performance. The decision for surgery came after a scan in Germany, and it was deemed the best way forward to address the issue."
