Arsenal Snatch Victory Over Leeds: Guimaraes Shines Amid Concerns
Bruno Guimaraes once again proved to be Arsenal’s savior, netting his second Premier League goal of the season against Leeds United. For the second time in just three league matches, the £75m summer signing came off the bench to make a game-changing impact. This time, he clinched the winner as the Gunners rallied to a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium. However, the match wasn’t without its worries. Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie had to be carried off during warm-down, raising concerns over a potential injury. After coming on as a substitute, he was seen running extra laps post-match, a common practice among clubs. With this win, Arsenal notched their fifth victory in six league games, putting them level with Manchester City at the top of the table. Yet, their title defense has already shown signs of vulnerability. After suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton in their previous outing, the Gunners found themselves trailing for the third time in four league matches—only a crucial penalty save from David Raya against Sunderland kept them from falling behind there too. Throughout the game against Leeds, Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm. But after conceding in the 55th minute, Riccardo Calafiori and Guimaraes—making his full home debut—turned the tide and secured three vital points. “It was a fantastic game. Leeds were excellent for an hour,” remarked Ally McCoist on TNT Sports. “Mikel Arteta made timely substitutions that gave Arsenal the boost they needed. That’s what champions do. Leeds can hold their heads high.” While Arsenal’s ability to clinch wins even when performing below par is often seen as a hallmark of champions, it raises questions about the underlying issues Arteta must address. As the defending champions, Arsenal aimed to make a splash in the transfer market, but they missed out on a key attacking signing. Guimaraes, however, has emerged as a pivotal player, aiding Arteta's squad in their quest for another title. At 28, the Brazilian midfielder is in his prime and has responded positively following a less-than-stellar performance against Brighton. His two goals have been crucial in securing points, justifying the hefty investment made in him. Arteta reflected on Guimaraes’ performance, stating, “He wasn’t at his best against Brighton, and that’s the level we expect at Arsenal. Every game, every moment, you have to bring your A-game.” Guimaraes has now become the first player this season to score twice after coming off the bench, with both strikes coming from outside the box. Defensively, Arsenal has some work to do. Last season, they boasted the tightest defense in the league, but they've already conceded five goals in just six matches. The partnership of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba is among the best globally, but the absence of Saliba due to injury is being felt. New signing Ezri Konsa, despite his talent, is still adjusting to his new team. As for Hincapie, the severity of his injury remains uncertain. He was seen clutching his right ankle while being assisted off the pitch by goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Having joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, he’s already dealt with muscular issues this season. Calafiori, on the other hand, has been a bright spot, scoring his first league goal of the season against Leeds. No defender has been involved in more Premier League goals than him this campaign. Arteta noted, “The last time we wore our kits, something felt off. We need to recognize that. The difference between being champions and being average is razor-thin.” He added, “If we don’t want it more than our opponents, we’ll struggle. We all felt the pressure and didn’t enjoy that game, but we must learn from it.” Arteta made notable choices for his starting lineup, opting to play Kai Havertz upfront despite his recent hamstring issue. This left Viktor Gyokeres on the bench once more, even though he was in superb form for Sweden with four goals recently. Gyokeres has yet to make a Premier League start and has struggled to meet the high standards required to lead Arsenal’s attack. The forward line didn’t quite click against Leeds, and with Havertz lacking sharpness, there are growing concerns that missing out on a top attacker in the summer might haunt Arsenal. Winger Christos Tzolis, who has had his moments this season, is also dealing with a hamstring issue, which prompted Arteta to field Noni Madueke on the left wing. Madueke, who missed out on the last England squad due to limited minutes, is still working to prove himself in this competitive environment.
