Arsenal Edge Slavia Prague 2-1 in UEFA Clash as Late Drama Unfolds
Arsenal endured a tense second half to clinch a 2-1 victory against Slavia Prague at the Fortuna Arena, ensuring they remain unbeaten this Champions League season.
The Gunners, who finished as runners-up last year, looked set for an easy win after a dominant first half where Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres both found the back of the net.
However, Slavia came roaring back in the second half, and Wiktor Nowak's late strike made it a nail-biting finish for Mikel Arteta’s team. Arsenal had to rely on a crucial goal-line clearance from Gabriel Magalhaes and some outstanding saves from David Raya to seal the win.
The hosts unleashed a barrage of 17 shots in the second half, a stark contrast to their solitary attempt before the break. Arsenal was initially in total control, but Slavia’s tactical shift to a back three allowed them to apply more pressure.
Arteta made six changes to the lineup after their 1-0 win against Liverpool, and the decision paid off early when Madueke slotted home from Gyokeres’ clever assist. Gyokeres then doubled the lead with a beautiful curling shot, showcasing his growing confidence after struggling to score earlier in the season.
The Swedish striker, who had failed to find the net in his first ten appearances, now has two goals in three outings following his strike in the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood Town. His performance against Slavia, highlighted by his assist for the opener and his ability to link play, bodes well for his future in the squad.
After the match, Arteta reflected on the two contrasting halves, emphasizing the difficulty of winning away in the Champions League. He noted the team’s exceptional first half but acknowledged their lack of control in the second, which allowed Slavia to capitalize on their mistakes.
"We knew the players and the opponent that we had in front of us," Arteta said. "We were on the back foot, very sloppy, and we gave away too many balls. There’s a lot to learn from this experience."
William Saliba made his return to the squad as an unused substitute, marking a positive step in his recovery from injury. As Arsenal moves up to third in the Champions League table, they’ll hope to build on this win and take valuable lessons into their upcoming matches.
